A MEASURABLE BOOST FOR ROCKPOOL

CARRIE MACDONALD, CO OWNER OF THE ROCKPOOL CAFE AND RESTAURANT TALKS TO US ABOUT WINNING A HITA 2014 AND WHAT IT’S DONE FOR BUSINESS.

Winning the Best Informal Eating experience for 2014 was a big surprise and it was a great honour for us, in confirming that our little cafe/restaurant in Cullen was not only eligible but capable of being the best in this particular class.

It quickly became apparent that the award has measurably increased our sales and also brought customers in from further afield. Cullen already attracts a huge number of visitors each year and tourism is vital for the success of local businesses such as ours.

We have had great support locally, not least because people recognise that tourism is a vital industry for the wellbeing of this area.  Cullen attracts a huge number of visitors each year and this, coupled with an excellent local trade, is really key to the success of our business.

Most of all, winning the award made us reflect on the experience our customers have at Rockpool, and what we can do to make it even better.  The HITA award  therefore gave us some renewed perspectives for continuous improvement,  as well as providing recognition from others in the industry that all the work we and our team of staff have put in to making Rockpool what it is,  has been worthwhile.

RECORD BREAKING AND AWARD WINNING YEAR FOR EILEAN DONAN CASTLE

DAVID WIN, CASTLE KEEPER AT EILEAN DONAN CASTLE TELLS US WHAT WINNING A HITA MEANT TO THEM.

Our whole team were absolutely thrilled and delighted to win the award for Best Visitor Attraction 2014, a year in which we enjoyed yet another record-breaking season at Eilean Donan, with over 380,000 visitors to the site.

Tourists are our lifeblood, pure and simple, and this award truly represents the icing on the cake after working steadily at continuous improvement, over quite a number of years, to enhance our visitors’ experience.

I personally consider it as hard won recognition of the efforts that everyone here has put in, and the fact that this award is judged by our industry peers is fabulous recognition of the entire team’s efforts and commitment.

It also assists us by helping to highlight and effectively communicate the quality of the visitor experience at Eilean Donan to a wider audience. In our case, apart from providing additional marketing opportunities, we have also seen new potential business partners and collaborators come forward on the back of it.

A HITA award is a measure of the commitment (that often goes un-noticed) to excellence and a desire to keep improving a quality visitor experience.

HITA HONOUR ENHANCES FESTIVAL REPUTATION FOR HEBCELT

Caroline Maclennan, director of the Hebridean Celtic Festival, winner of the Best Event or Festival award 2014 talks to us about their HITA Experience.

Winning the Best Event or Festival category in the 2014 HITA awards enhanced our reputation at home and abroad in the run up to the milestone 20th HebCelt. this year.

Receiving the award was a major achievement and a fitting tribute for all the hard work done by an army of volunteers who help ensure HebCelt continues to grow and thrive.

Over the last two decades the festival has grown from an event attracting around 1,000, mostly local fans, to one with an audience 15 times that size, half of which comes from outside the islands.

HebCelt is one of the biggest events in the islands’ calendar and it is extremely gratifying that HITA recognised the contribution it makes in attracting visitors from around the world and encouraging them to extend their stay in this area.

The week of the festival is the busiest in the islands outside the festive season and the huge influx of visitors and the cosmopolitan atmosphere it generates not only creates a feel-good factor, it is also a major boost for local businesses, including those in the tourism sector in our host town of Stornoway and the wider area.

Hotels, guest houses and campsites are all full during festival week; extra ferries are put on and are packed with music fans; restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops all see a huge rise in customers.

During the four days of HebCelt – from 15-18 July – the focus is on Lewis and the Outer Hebrides and we use that to promote to a wide audience our Celtic and Gaelic culture, our local talent and the area in general.

This year, the national Year of Food and Drink, we are hosting Blasad dhen Fhèis -Taste the Festival – to raise awareness of the rich array of produce available, locally grown and harvested from sea and shore.

A Food Trail will showcase local food and drink champions the length and breadth of the Hebrides, while there will be pop up cookery demonstrations and a variety of local food and drink products available at the festival itself.

Winning the HITA award was an achievement and it has inspired us to work harder to promote this spectacular part of the world.

Caroline Maclennan, director of the Hebridean Celtic Festival

BADGE OF DISTINCTION FOR EAGLE BRAE

HITA AWARD HELPS BUSINESSES STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD

In our experience, our award for Best Holiday Accommodation, and the HITA winner’s badge on our website, certainly help to cement the booking decisions of potential customers. It is well known that there is a high number of tourism businesses in the Highlands, and that the standard is very high, so they know this is truly a badge of distinction for our luxury log cabins business.
It’s a Badge of distinction
Our customers are our life blood, and successful tourism businesses are vital to the economy of our local area, Strathglass, which is very natural, rugged and rural, without the economic mainstays enjoyed by other parts of the Highlands, such as distilleries, ski areas or oil-related industry.

These awards also help individual businesses to become better known locally and, through the wider connections of so many Highland people, the quality and strength of our reputation is also significantly boosted.

The HITA awards are tremendously useful in themselves, as they are so well organised they help to promote the standard of Highlands tourism as a whole to the rest of Scotland and beyond.

A WARM WELCOME FROM HIGHLAND EXPERIENCE TOURS

EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF THE HIGHLANDS WITH HIGHLAND EXPERIENCE TOURS, WINNERS OF THE WARMEST WELCOME HITA 2014

Winning the Warmest Welcome HITA award was reward for achieving a high standard of customer service, but we also see it as an incentive to live up to our title.

Together with our Partnership in Tourism award in 2013, it has highlighted the success of Highland Experience and encouraged us to continue to enhance the services we provide.

We feel so proud to show Scotland through our eyes to thousands of visitors from all over the world. We use their feedback to constantly improve our tours and motivate our staff to ensure visitors truly experience the best the Highlands have to offer.

We now have five different accommodation packages with our multi-day tours so tourists can experience Scotland the way they want. We also offer bespoke tours, activity tours, shore excursions, so we are flexible and aim to meet and exceed our clients’ expectations.

Positive recognition is helpful for any business. The HITA awards help foster positive relationships between different organisations working in the Highlands and Islands. We believe they also promote healthy rivalry in a competitive market, supporting growth and change within Scottish tourism.

Organisations have to adapt and improve to keep pace with demand. We aim to provide the best experience visitors can have in Scotland and being rewarded by a public organisation reassures us that we are on the right path.

WIN / WIN FOR KILDA CRUISES

KILDA CRUISES WERE DELIGHTED TO WIN A HITA 2014 AND MORE SO WHEN IT LED THEM ON TO WIN BEST OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE AT THE 2015 SCOTTISH THISTLE AWARDS

We found the entire HITA process a very rewarding one, from the very point we entered into the nomination process. We reviewed and evaluated every aspect of what we do, from initial contact, the trips themselves and handling feedback.  We were encouraged by that process as, when a busy season is underway it can be so hard to take a constructive yet rigorous appraisal of what we do.

Going on to win the award then had a very positive impact on Kilda Cruises’ business, as we feel that we have had more enquiries, and consequent bookings, as a result.  Although we were the first operator running regular day trips to the St Kilda archipelago, there are several other businesses following suit and the award gives us a mark of distinction, an edge, by which to build towards further growth.

Tourism is a massive and growing aspect of the economy in the Outer Hebrides, where the trend is for unique, one of a kind experiences, and we are happy that the award adds to that cachet image.

The fact that the awards are judged by leading figures in the industry gives potential passengers – and us – confidence in an offering that is of consistently high quality. Closer to home, we were very touched by the response from former passengers and the community locally in Harris.

We took our entire team to Inverness for the HITA Finals and that was a tremendous boost after a very busy season.  We wanted to show appreciation for the enormous effort that the crew make – and the long days their partners have to endure while they are at sea!

We were thrilled when our HITA success led on to nomination to the Scottish Thistle Awards – and yet more so when we went on to win the national title for Scotland’s Best Outdoor Adventure Experience, 2015.
